gertrude bell

Gertrude Belle was an english writer, traveller, political officer and archaeologist who explored and mapped the middle east during the early twentieth century. as well as  playing  a major role in establishing and helping administer the modern state of Iraq, she was also dedicated to not only preserving Iraqi culture but to keeping cultural material in their country of origin. she supervised excavations and uncovered extensive collections from the Babylonian Empire. her contribution to Iraqi archaeology resulted in the Baghdad Archaeological Museum (now the National Museum of Iraq, sadly looted during the Gulf War).
i read her life story while I was studying archaeology. for me she  evoked the ultimate romantic notion of archaeological exploration, during which she acquired a team of locals which she directed and led on her expeditions.  her base camps even included damask table linen and silverware!(talk about glam camping!) throughout her travels Bell established close relations with tribe members across the Middle East. conveniently, being a woman gave her exclusive access to the chambers of wives of tribe leaders.
she also worked alongside T.H Lawrence (yep, Lawrence of Arabia).

she never married but she had an unconsummated affair with a married man, with whom she exchanged love letters between 1913-1915. after his death she dedicated her  entire life to her work. many believe she never recovered from the loss of her only love.

A woman well worth knowing about.

suitcase and camera

I  got given my first camera when i was fifteen  and i have been taking photographs ever since and that means many boxes of prints and negatives. although i sometimes use my digital camera i still mostly shoot in 35 mm film format. i have seven cameras, including a 1940's medium format twin lens Rolleicord (works perfectly and much admired when in use).  a friend recently asked they would like to one day see my photographs but that would take more than one day! So instead i've posted a small selection of travel snaps... all film

n.b. film photos quality transformed as a result of image downsizing and scanning.

I took this photo of the Parthenon when i was fifteen, i wish i still had this camera
